First Day of School!

Sarah was such a big girl today. She was so excited. Last night I went to tuck her in at 11 pm and she heard me and was ready to get up, saying "yeah, kindergarten!" I had to say "shhhh...no, not yet..go back to sleep..."

This morning when I went to wake her up she was bouncing on her bed saying "kindergarten" over and over and over. lmao

And she was SO VERY EXCITED to get dressed in her uniform.

ANd after school she was so very excited to sit and do homework I gave her while Justin did his homework.

She loves school.

Ok, so this is what I heard....

She didn't eat her snack this morning b/c Mrs Chmiel told them to get out their healthy snacks. So she went and got her lunch box instead and ate her grapes that were for her lunch. Duh! I told her that her morning snack I packed is healthy and she is to eat it. lol

She played with Caroline Clinton (from Mrs Green's class) at recess. I asked how she met her yet since they hadn't met on the bus yet and she said "I asked all the girls if they were Caroline." Amazing! Where is my shy girl?

She also says she sat with Caroline at lunch which means they must have sat at the middle lunch table that is half K-1, half K-2.

At one point she said "And Grace (Ms Carrie's daughter) is in my class! And she's at my table!" I didn't realize she would know who Grace was. lol

I asked if she made friends with any of the girls in her own class and she said "All of them!"

Kindergarten

My baby girl starts Kindergarten tomorrow and I am truly going to miss her like crazy. But tonight she said the sweetest thing to me. She stopped to hug me and told me "I'm sorry Mommy. I know you're going to miss me since I will be gone all day." Awww...I love her! But, really, I am totally excited for her and hope that she loves it as much as we think she will!

Never!

When we went for Justin's annual doctor appt back in June, the whole family went, so Sarah was with us. The doctor asked about his eating and all that. I said how he was picky and didn't eat a meal mommy would make, but he ate a ton of veggies and fruits.

Doctor: Well, now that you're getting older you're going to need to start taking some of what I call "No Thank you" bites. That means you try a bite and if you don't like it you just say "no thank you." Do you think you can do that?
Justin: (not so happy?)
Me: Sarah, did you hear that?
Sarah: Never! I'm never going to do that!
Me to the doctor: Yeah, she's the one I am more worried about!

Too much to remember

There are so many things this summer that I wish I could blog to remember but I don't and then I forget it all. Bummer.

Sarah is now swimming so much better. So swimmies. But only her head is up. Her body and legs are still so far down. But she is doing it. And she loves it.

Both kids got to do Lazer Tag for the first time this summer and they loved it!

Sarah, of course, has always hated the sprinkler. We went to Ciera's party yesterday which was a pool party and it had a lot of sprinklers and a fun water slide. At first she was so nervous and didn't look like she was going to go do any of the stuff. But eventually she tried it all and loved it! I was so proud of her!

Justin watched Ed and Chris Budd fish today and now he wants a fishing pole. Yikes.

Today we had the Budds and Washocks up to my parents to swim. At the end of the day Sarah and Andrea had gotten dressed and gone downstairs to play with the toys. When they came back outside, (and it was almost time to leave), Sarah saw that Kiersten, Ashley and Justin were still in the pool. She asked me to put on her suit. I said "no, it's almost time to go home." She looked at me "I know where my suit is and I am getting it!" Well!!! A few minutes later she came out of the house and I nearly died. We all nearly died. She had put the suit on backwards. And with most suits it might not matter, but this suit had cut-outs in the back. Thus, her nipples both showed. OMG! None of us could stop laughing. She had no idea and just marched right over to the pool and got in. I did feel bad later though b/c she was upset that people were laughing at her. I explained that she had her suit on wrong, etc. She was all sad and said she couldn't get it on the other way. (But, really, she still pulls up she shorts wrong most of the time too. Dressing is just not her thing yet.) Anyway - poor girl - she showed us alright!

I guess we won't be going canoing anytime soon.
While we were in Maine, Mick asked us if we could all go canoing in the back streams next summer.
Sarah's answer: (with lots of anger)
Why? That's boring? You just sit there and do nothing. Why would anyone want to go canoing? There's nothing to do?
She went on and on.
And, funnier yet, I was telling the story to my mom and Ian and Ian's response was "she's right. It is boring. I hate it. There's nothing to do!" lol

One of Justin's favorite things in Maine this year was playing in the tide pools. The beach had changed shape this year and the tide pools were huge. He loved playing in them and actually got to play with his boat. He even convinced Grampy to buy a new boat for both him and Sarah.

But, of course, his favorite thing was jumping the waves. He just loves to go out into the waves. He would hold my hand and jump with me. And as he was laughing and smiling, he'd yell to me "This is so much more fun than playing in the hotel room!" lol Poor kid - everytime we were in the room, he was content to stay there and play. Then he'd get out and have a blast.

Sarah made a friend our last full day in Maine. Her name was Gabi. We had been talking to her mom all week but this was the first time Sarah and her had gotten to play. They made sandcastles, boats, and used the boogie boards together. Sarah had a lot of fun. Then the rest of the trip she talked about Gabi non-stop. It was so funny.

Justin is totally into the older kid shows now. He fell in love with The Suite Life with Zack and Cody before we went to Maine. Now he wants to watch that and all the tween shows.

So many little things....

Mornings....
At the beginning of the summer, we FINALLY convinced Sarah to stop calling for us in the morning when she woke up. She will now finally get up and leave her room. But she still won't go past her door if Justin is not up. If his door is closed, she will go back into her room and wait for him. She has never come into us. So weird. But that was a HUGE step! If she hears that he is up, she will still call for him though.

Swimming....
For a little girl that wouldn't even go into the pool until last year, Sarah has now come a LONG way! We have spent a ton of time in the pool this year. It has been a HOT summer. We convinced her to get her face wet. We convinced her to jump in! That was HUGE! She loved it. We even convinced her to jump off the diving board (with a life jacket, of course.) (She actually was easier to get in than Justin. Justin wouldn't really do it and eventually Grampy just pushed him off the board. He loved it, of course!) Then the swim lessons started. She started in level 1, Justin in level 2. After 8 lessons, she just moved up to level 2 today with Justin. She is so excited. We had practiced on Thursday having her jump into Grammy's pool while holding onto the boogie board so she was prepped for that and did great. I was glad we practiced though. The first 2 times we did it she let go of the board and went right under. So it helped that she learned how to it and was ready for it today. She did great! Then today we went swimming at Grammy's all day with teh Washocks and she spent the day in the shallow end with no swimmies on. She did great trying to swim all day. (But boy did she get tired by evening!)

Bees....
My strange boy today told Andrea not to worry about the bees b/c "they won't bother you if you ignore them." really? When did his feelings change?

Teeth.....
Justin had 2 teeth pulled on June 30th. He wasn't very happy about it when he figured out what was happening. He had medicine that made him awake but forget it all.
Oh my....
about 20 minutes after he took it, he slowly lifted his arm, looking at it "woah, this is weird." The nurse picked up the phone right away "I think he's ready." lol
He was so out of it but during the procedure he cried and cried. It was so sad.
When we got home, he was still just so out of it. He couldn't hold his head up for a while. His lip was so swollen and he couldn't stand how funny it felt. It was all so weird.

"I Can't See It!!!"

Poor Sarah! (Of course, she still wasn't quite herself today. She never got sick, but she woke up with a low grade fever and she never ate again today. She finally asked for some food around 3 so I gave her some toast. First real food in 2 days. Anyway....)

She turned 5 and I noticed the clock at 5:15. (Justin asked all day "Was she out of your belly yet??????) I yelled "Sarah - You're 5 now!" and we sang Happy Birthday to her. She ran to the mirror and was so sad.

"I can't see it! I don't look five."

At bedtime, she was crying about it.

I am not sure what she was expecting, but she doesn't think she is actually 5.

Poor kid. I hope she'll be less emotional about it after this virus.

A Party we won't forget

We celebrated Sarah's 5th birthday today with our friend and family party at home.

All day, leading up to the party, she was very tired, just layed on the couch, and ate nothing. The only thing she did do was go with Mick and Justin to get her balloons. Otherwise, she just looked "off."

At 1pm, she started looking like she would fall asleep on the couch. I put a diaper on her since she still wears one at night, but that woke her up. (For the record, she has not napped for a couple years. Not a single nap.) Finally she fell asleep at 2. Great timing - NOT. Party starts at 3 and she's asleep on the couch. Crazy day.

Well she woke up right before the party. I got her dressed. She was still groggy, but perked up and went outside to play with Emily, Ian and Justin. And she continued to play when everyone else got here. She loved the bouncey. She cried when people were on her swing. She was cranky about the swing sharing, but otherwise she was fine.

Did I mention is is May 1st and it was 84 degrees out. It was HOT and sunny.

She came in at one point and asked for watermelon. I was nervous since she hadn't eaten all day, but Mick said to let her have it. OK. We didn't give her much though.

Cake time came. We sang. She was happy. I started cutting the cake. I got the first piece ready to give to her. I hear "Ummm...Aimm....she just threw up." Yup. She threw up the watermelon at the table. It was on her, the table and her seat. Ugh!!!

Ed finished the cake. Mick brought her inside. I went to help get her clothes. Grammy cleaned the table. She got changed. She wanted cake. Ummm...no. I let her have an italian ice instead. Everyone else got cake and ice cream.

Poor birthday girl.

Fast forward. Not much later we did the pinata. After all the fun, Sarah wanted a lollipop. I said ok. She stopped partway through (which she never does) and threw it on the ground and asked to be held. I got daddy to hold her. And we said we'd open gifts.

We joked during the gifts that she better not throw up on the gifts. Then, right after opening all the gifts, she told me she needed to throw up. No lie. I walked her over to the garbage bag of wrapping paper and had her put her head in it. She didn't throw up. I asked my mom to get me the puke bucket and I carried her inside. She stuck her head in the bucket. Then eventually she just layed down, lifeless, in my arms for about 10 minutes. But she kept asking to play with her new play-doh set. So, daddy opened it up, set it up at the table and we brought her over. You guessed it - she threw up everywhere. Poor kid.

So, we cleaned her up again (remember, she didn't have any food all day, so it was all liquid) and I decided we'd keep her inside the rest of the day. We put her in jammies and brought her bakc out to her play doh. She started playing. Then Kiersten joined her. Within an hour she was really looking revived. And later you would never have guessed that she had been sick.

So, no clue what had happened. She must have had something wrong. Tired all day. No eating. Low fever that started in the late afternoon. But maybe the heat and running around made it worse.

As we changed her the second time, she told us how sad she was that this was a bad birthday b/c she threw up. Poor kid.

Well, Happy Birthday Sarah.

We'll never forget this birthday party!

I saw a glimpse into the future...

I turned 38 today.

Justin woke up at 6. I heard him run across his room, turn on his light, and start doing stuff around his room. Ends up he was making me some presents. So, so sweet! He made me a wonderful card. He made me a Trio birthday cake. And he made me a lego creation with 3 people on it. (When he gave it to me, he said to Sarah "Sorry Sarah, I didn't have room for you." Sarah burst out crying. So of course, Mick and I quickly had to say "no, no, it was Daddy that isn't there." )

When Sarah woke up, Justin wanted her to go and make gifts for me. She was being stubborn and didn't want to leave her bed - well, most likely big blankey. I heard the problem, stepped in and asked "Sarah, don't you want to go with Justin to make me some presents?"

Her answer - "You know I don't love you Mommy."

Yup. 2 days less than 5, but acting 15. Just great. I see the future and it doesn't look pretty. I prefer loving and sweet little Sarah. lol

Sarah's ER trip

I hadn't posted, but I need to before I forget...

Mar 20 after bedtime I heard Sarah cough several times with what sounded like the croup cough. Then around 11:15 I heard it again and decided to give her a treatment while she slept. That just freaked her out and made it much, much worse. She went into a full croup attack and couldn't breathe.

I had to call and wake my mom and have her go with me to the ER. We waited quite a while. It sucked. Luckily, the barking cough stopped right before we go to the hospital. My mom had managed to calm her down right as we were pulling into the parking lot. So that was great. But she was still struggling and wheezing a lot.

When they finally did call us in, they didn't even have a room for us. We ended up in a bed next to the registration desk. It wasn't good. No chairs for me or Grammy. And Sarah was so tired. When the pulmanist came to treat her, she wouldn't even answer his questions. She was just half asleep.

Eventually, around 2 am or so, they gave her the first dose of steriods. OMG! She went insane. To say that she woke up is an understatement. She was wired. She sang. And sang. And sang. And played, talking to herself, very loudly.

When we got home, it was around 4am and I was exhausted. Sarah was wired. She played in her bed, loudly for a long time before she finally fell asleep. I had been so afraid to even bring her home b/c she had been so loud at the hospital. I had to go into her and remind her to be quiet. It was bad. She eventually fell asleep. Me? I fell asleep around 4:30 or so. And, of course, Sarah was awake by 6:30 am. Insane!

But, we just treated her with steriods and albuteral for the week and she was all better! Thank God!

I was supposed to bring her to her doctor for a follow-up, but I never did. The one nurse had said it would be ok not to if she seemed fine. And she was fine. So I didn't take the time. I hope that was ok.

Mick's Facebook post tonight...

My son just informed me that he wants to read the book "Amlelia Bedelia and the Act of Contrition." That Catholic School education is really paying off.

Snow - finally!

According to Justin, this has been "the most boring winter ever!" He wants to use that as a title in my scrapbook about this winter. Why?

Well, it snowed Dec 9th and we had a snow day.

Then.....

well....

storm after storm after storm missed us.

South of us got hammered. Even Washington DC got 3 ft of snow, along with NJ and Penn, and we got not even a dusting. It is just sad. Nothing but brown grass to look at all winter.

But the driving has been great.

But today, during another big storm that missed us, we did manage to get at least the outer edges of the storm and we finally got snow again. We got to play in it and it was great!

Sarah couldn't stop eating snowballs and Justin couldn't stop putting his face right into the snow to eat it. They also wanted to have snowball fights with Daddy.

Except for Burglers

I always forget to tell this. Justin started it a couple years ago talking about how he loves everyone in the world except for burglers. He said it so much that now Sarah loves to sing her original song of:

"I love everyone in the whole wide world except for burglers."

Justin's school entrance

The past few weeks have made a big difference with my boy's morning routine. I still have to walk him in and wait in the lobby for a minute or two. But now I wave goodbye while he is taking off his boots and talking to people. With boot season, I am not waiting for him to change and walk down the hall to do his routine.

I do miss the routine though. I must admit it. It is sad that it is ending.

My boy is growing up.

And her fears continue...

The backstory:
It all started with Sarah being sick. She started looking sick after school on Friday, January 29th. She looked really flushed and started coughing a lot. Eventually she came down with a fever. The fever went on and off for about 6 days. I took her the to doctor that first Saturday just to check that she didn't have strep and scarlet fever, since she cheeks were so red. Negative. Coughing got worse. Fever continued. She would get up in the morning, bring her big blankie and all her dollies to the couch and lay down all day. This lasted for pretty much 8 days. I had brought her back to the doctor on Weds b/c her cough was so bad. She was up all night coughing like she was going to vomit. It was very scary. Dr Talma again saw her and said her lungs sounded ok but he gave me antiobiotics in case it continued. It did. She finally started getting a little better once she had the medicine. My poor girlie.

We had our Superbowl party Sunday so she was finally getting up playing. Then she went to bed late. It bad for an UGLY Monday. She was a nasty girl that day. SCREAMED that she didn't want to bring Justin to school. Then SCREAMED when she didn't want to go to school. Of course, she really didn't want to leave her big blankie or get off the couch which were the big problems.

Anyway, to get her motivated for school..... I looked up her school calendar to see what they would be doing that day. "OH fun Sarah, today you are making your Valentine bags. How fun!!"

And then....

I looked to see what she had missed the week before. And then I saw it! OMG! On Friday they made Oscar the Grouch. How crap. I can't even begin to imagine what she would have done. I am assuming she would have screamed but I just can't picture it all. I am assuming they would have had to keep her in another room during that time. No way would she have sat and done that project. Mick says she would have gone running from the room. Probably.

Anyway, I told her (my mistake) "OMG Sarah. I am so glad you were sick last Friday. They made Oscar the Grouch." She was frozen. She held up ok but she was internalizing it all and I didn't realize that.

When we got to school and I went to get her out of the van, she was all worried "What if the Oscars are still there?" Poor girl. I told her we'd talk to the teachers and ask.

They weren't. Big Phew. I told Ms Reena all about though in case she saw one of the few that had been left behind.

When I picked Sarah up Ms Reena told me that she had peed 4 times. What? I thought about it. She hadn't even had anything to drink that morning. Hmmm...

Next day she peed like crazy. At one point it was 8 times in one hour. I assumed it was stress, but......

I took her to the doctor on Weds (made an early appt and skipped school to take her) b/c she also mentioned that it hurt to wipe.

But here is where I figured her out: When I told her she wasn't going to go to school that day b/c we were going to go to the doctor instead, she was so happy and relieved. I was so confused and asked her why she was glad to miss school. Her answer: "What if they make Elmo today?"

Oh, my poor, poor baby girl. I had no clue she was thinking that way. I talked to her later and told her that they probably wouldn't ever be making another Sesame Street craft. But I really didn't see any progress until I told her that I would talk to Ms Reena about it. I told her I'd make sure she wouldn't ever have to see those crafts there and that she could trust me and Ms Reene. That finally seemed to relieve her. And it also seemed to be the end of the crazy peeing.

I still don't know why she is so scared of Sesame Street. All I can think is - MAYBE - just MAYBE - our trip to Sesame Place 3 years ago scared the crap out of her. She used to love Elmo. On our trip she hated the mascots but dealt with it. I am racking my brain trying to recall if her irrational fears started soon after that trip or not. I can't remember but it seems likely.

Sarah started reading today!

I decided to start working on reading with her since she's been loving the sight words so much. I talked to the kindergarten teacher this morning and asked for some tips. As soon as I got home, Sarah had asked to work on her sight words. Once we did, I said "let's work on some sentences." I wrote a few small sentences down on her chalk board for her and she did great. She wanted to read a book. So I got out the lowest level kindergarten readers and she read a couple with me. I am so excited! She is pretty much where Justin was at this point last year, but with a whole lot more enthusiasm!!!

100!

My girly counted for me tonight when I asked her how high she could count. Both times she counted to 100! Go Sarah! This girl is SO ready for kindergarten. She will love school. She loves going over her sight words every day and she will know all the kindergarten words before she starts. She continues to just soak it all up. I love it. (And I deserve an easier go around this next time through. lol)

I am so proud of you Sarah!!!

(Oh, and yes, I know many 4 yr old count to 100. But, for kindergarten screening they only need to count to 20. And, many kids at that point can only count to 20. Justin was at about 30 for his screening.)

What do you believe from a 4 yr old?

Sarah told me today that she was line leader at school. She was so excited. The highlights:
- She got to hand out snacks. (They had cheeze its. But Ms Reena wouldn't let her have any since she didn't know if it was ok.)
- She got to watch the class while Ms Reena went to the bathroom. (I asked if she had to yell at anyone. She said "yes, the boys." When I asked why, she told me "they used bad words. They kept saying poopy." lmao)

Then she told me that the kids all had snow cones today. What? Why? And that she didn't have any b/c she didn't know if I wanted her having any dye today. (She knows she can have some small amounts from time to time since she doesn't react to it.) Seriously? Did she seriously turn down a snow cone b/c of the dye? (Her teachers have no clue she isn't allowed to have dyes since she brings in her own snack anyway.) And seriously, why would they make snow cones in January.

I wanted to think she was making it up but I think her story was too complex to be made up.
- She repeatedly told me that there were 3 flavors (watermelon, blueberry and cotton candy) and that she would have picked watermelon.
- She described how Ms Reena put ice into a machine, puched down and then they saw all the shavings coming out. I don't think she could make that part up.

But it is all so strange. Snow cones in January?

I will have to question her teacher on Friday. I want to know if it really happened, if she really didn't have one, and what she said to explain why she wasn't having one. (When I asked her what she told Ms Reena about not wanting one, she said she didn't say anything. I asked her if she told her she couldn't have dye. She said no. So what did she say?)

Justin and Hot Lunch

Up until now Justin never had an interest in Hot Lunch at school. That worked fine for me. He was easy. Everyday he took a cheese sandwich, celery (sometimes some carrots too) and a snack. Every day.

This year he is barely eating his lunch. He only eats about 2 bites of his sandwich. Annoying. And then he'd want dinner at 3pm.

So he asked to get hot lunch on Hot Dog day. Ok. So that was yesterday. I let him do it. He loved it! But, I really starting panicing in the morning that the hot dog or ketchup might have red40 in them. Most of them don't, but some do. Luckily, I was able to check before school and was able to verify that they didn't. Good - for that day. But they don't always buy the same thing. Crud!

They he told me that they served pudding with the lunch. He didn't get it b/c he knew better, thank goodness. But now I need to find out if they always offer pudding with the hot dogs. And is it always the same brand and type of pudding. And is it dye free. How do I ever find this out? Ugh!!!

But the kid loved it!

More soccer

We started our second session of indoor soccer today. The kids really do enjoy it. I am so glad we started bringing them to Afrims. And it will really help Justin with his skills. It also helps Sarah. Here she is middle of the road and that will help.

Still in her room

Every morning Sarah still stays in her room until someone comes to get her. She will call out for "Mommy" on school days or "Justin" on the weekends.

She is 4 1/2. I can't figure out why she still has never gotten out of her bed without someone coming to get her.

"Living on a Prayer"

Come and visit us and you will surely hear the kids singing, I mean, screaming, out the lyrics, to Bon Jovi's "Living on a Prayer."

As much as we love Bon Jovi and play their music for the kids, we don't play the old stuff much. We have never introduced them to this song. But Justin came home singing it one day. He said he heard it on the bus from Ian.

So, now we've shown them the video several times, played it on the Ipod, and they know it well.

So, stop by our house, and you will often hear at least one of the kids yelling out "Johnny used to work on the docks...."
