The Triangle Chronicles

I never thought I would have a story about a triangle. But I do!

It all started 4 weeks ago at Kindermusic:
Ms Vici told us that it was time to put out some instruments for everyone to play. What she does is put out a lot of instruments and the kids all take 1 at a time and play them, then get another one, etc. There is usually very little drama involved. Until Sarah, that is.
As soon as Ms Vici started putting out instruments, Sarah told me that she was going to wait until Ms Vici put out the triangle. Ummm...ok....whatever. So, out comes the triangle and off runs Sarah to get it. Oh, and I should mention that this was the last instrument that Ms Vici took out. Sarah had just sat and waited and waited. So, Sarah grabs the triangle and runs back to me. She plays it a little and then just holds it. Eventually, she put it down in front of her to look at something that was in front of me. Well, this is where the drama starts. Nathan happened to be standing nearby and he picked up the triangle. Oh my....you would have thought that Sarah's world had ended. Crying. Crying. And more crying. Eventually, Nathan's mom had Nathan return the triangle to Sarah. Thanks, but, really, that wasn't necessary. Sarah does need to learn to share. After that, Sarah never played it, she just held it tight against her leg so no one could take it. Then song over and Sarah runs to return it to Ms Vici. (At least she's ok with giving it back. lol)

Fast forward to the following Weds:
Ms Vici again announces that it is time to put out some instruments. She again explains the rules - only one instrument at a time, you must share, etc.
Sarah again tells me that she is going to wait for the triangle. Again, she waits and watches as Ms Vici puts out all the instruments. Again, the triangle is the last one she takes out. This time, however, Sarah reacted too late and Nathan picked up the triangle before she had a chance to do so. Oh my! Again, drama like you can't imagine. Crying. Crying. More crying. And again Nathan's mom has Nathan give the triangle back to Sarah. Ugh! That is very nice, but again, it is not helping Sarah learn that she needs to share and that she cannot have everything that she wants.
And again, Sarah just holds the triangle against her leg so that no one else can have it.

Fast forward to the following Monday night:
After Justin's class, I had Mick take the kids out and I stayed behind to talk to Ms Vici about Sarah. She agrees that this is not helping Sarah learn to share. She told me that next class she would not put out the triangle at all and we'd see what Sarah does.

Fast forward to that Weds morning:
Ms Vici explains that she is putting out new instruments. And Ms Vici has hidden the triangles so that Sarah cannot even see them in the closet.
Sarah again sits and tells me that she is going to wait for the triangle. She gets upset when I tell her that Ms Vici is putting out other instruments and that she may not be putting out the triangle. Sarah pouts and watches Ms Vici and waits for her to put out the triangle. No triangle. Sarah starts to cry. "I want the triangle." I tell her "Sorry Sarah, but Ms Vici put out different instruments today." More crying. "But I want the triangle." More crying. Then, eventually Sarah gets up and grabs a drum. She plays it with me. "This is fun!" Yeah! We have success!

Fast forward to the following Tues night:
Me: Sarah, we are going to Ms Vici's in the morning.
Sarah: (Pouting) But mommy, what if she doesn't put out the triangle?

Fast forward to Weds morning:
Ms Vici again says it is time to put out the instruments. I can see the triangles in her closet. Hmmm.... Sarah tells me she is going to wait for a drum. Oh boy, guess she's just replacing her triangle obsession with a drum obsession. Oh well....we'll see what happens. We wait and watch Ms Vici. Sarah waits. Then BOOM - Off she RUNS - faster than I ever thought she could run. I look up expecting to see her grabbing a drum. But - DOH! She comes running back with a triangle. Oh brother!!! Here we go again. This time she never lets go of it, but also never holds it against her lap. This time she played it.

So that is the story of the triangle....for now....
